About the event
Adventurous musicianship, improvisation and musical encounters. Three distinctive acts from the experimental and independent music scenes and one DJ with more deep cuts than anyone else I can think of.
Gracing us is a special collaboration between American shakuhachi player and electronic musician Philip Gelb [@soundandsavor] and Southern Thai multi-instrumentalist KAN-TA [@kantaphong_kanta], bringing together the sounds of the Nora tradition and the blowing Zen of Japanese flute through free improvisation and experimental sound.
Having made a long awaited return from an eight year hiatus earlier this year with new music, Bangkok psychedelic folk Sasi (ศศิ) [@sasiband2015] are well and truly back. Named after the moon, they explore an etheraeal mix of intimate folk songwriting and expansive psychedelic experimentation. The band developed a distinctive sound built around expressive vocals and folk songwriting, surrounded by layers of guitar, rhythm and improvisation that draw freely from jazz, reggae, rock and psychedelia. Known also for their unusual two-drummer setup, Sasi have always been difficult to pin down, moving between gentle, melodic passages and more unpredictable instrumental excursions.
H1F4 [@_h1f4] was started together by accomplished musicians from Bangkok's alternative rock and jazz scenes in something approaching a local underground supergroup. With roots first planted in the Silipakorn University campus, their skilled yet playful instrumental explorations include elements of psychedelic rock, punk, jazz and avant-garde noise, with a healthy disregard for the borders that traditionally seperate these genres. H1F4 are one of Bangkok's more unruly musical propositions, I am beyond stocked for you all to see them.
Following the live acts will be No Ears [@rexpolaroyd] in the frontroom with a vinyl only mix to keep us moving late.
Three distinct performances connected by a shared appetite for musical exploration, collaboration and the unexpected.
